Obituary

Kenneth Lee Frizane was born on December 5, 1942 to Leroy and Ruth Frizane. Brought up in Chicago, Illinois as the oldest of three boys, his Christian parents dedicated Ken to the Lord as an infant and nurtured him in godly ways throughout childhood. The family attended the North Side Gospel Center, and as a boy in the Awana youth program, Ken accepted Christ's gift of salvation, remaining a believer and servant of his Savior throughout life. He attended Our Savior Lutheran School in Norwood Park and was always grateful for his early Christian education.

Ken's music education began at home with piano and cornet lessons given by his father. In high school he was a member of the ROTC band as well as other musical groups. However, his greatest involvement was as an organizer of the Taft High School Hi-C Bible Club, where scores of teens attended and came to know Christ. He also attended Camp Awana each summer and became a leader of boys while in his teens.

After high school in 1960, Ken enrolled at Wright Community College where a friend from the youth group at Elmwood Park Bible Church also attended. Ken and Grace not only attended classes together but also organized an InterVarsity Christian Fellowship group, weekly presenting the gospel of Christ to students. During these years, Ken, his father, and brothers could often be seen on an intercity street corner, playing their instruments, and inviting people into a local mission to hear the gospel.

After graduating from Wright, Ken enrolled in the electrical engineering program at the University of Illinois and Grace became a Christian Education major at Moody Bible Institute. The letters and phone calls between the two began to grow.

Ken worked twenty hours a week in the research labs at the University of Illinois and lived on a dollar a day while attending classes. Every Sunday morning, he rode his bike to a local nursing home and played the piano or cornet for the residents. In the evening he would attend the Twin City Bible Church, Student Supper Club and Bible Study, where his faith stayed firm.

Ken graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in June 1965 and the following week began a 25-year career as an engineer with Zenith Electronics. During his time with Zenith, he earned two patents, and the company underwrote his Master of Science degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Ken always had a passion for math, science, Biblical archaeology, and creation.

Ken and Grace were married on July 10, 1965. Shortly after, they were asked to direct the high school ministry of the Elmwood Park Bible Church and began a lifetime of creative youth ministry involvement. The 10 years as high school directors were some of their most memorable and fruitful years as they invested themselves in the lives of young teens.

Ken and Grace became parents a few years after marriage when their daughter Kathlynn Joy was born. Ken was a fun-loving and kind father. It was during his parenthood years that Ken became reinvolved in Awana, working with boys in both the club and camping programs, building young lives on the Word of God.

His involvement also grew in the ministry of music as he inherited the baton and directed the 30-piece Christian Fellowship Concert Band. He founded the Solid Brass Ensemble and directed several other instrumental groups, producing almost 50 concerts a year.

Ken, Grace, and Kathy moved to Mount Prospect, Illinois in 1979 where they resided for 38 years. Ken became an adjunct professor at Roosevelt University where he taught math and computer science. Involved in the ministry of Mount Prospect Bible Church, Ken continued to serve his Savior in a multitude of ways. Ken and Grace were a team, serving as Christian Education and Awana directors as well as working with a Child Evangelism Fellowship club in a Chicago public school. Ken served with Gideons International for over 20 years, distributing the Scripture to local school campuses, hospitals, jails, and other institutions.

Kathy Frizane was married in 1996 to Ray Montonera and blessed Ken and Grace with two grandsons, Darrell and Andrew. Darrell is married to Abigail and a great-granddaughter, Eliana Grace, was born one year ago.

In the course of their 58 years of marriage they traveled to over 20 foreign countries, involved in ministry together.

After moving to Lake Zurich six years ago, Ken immediately became involved in the ministry of Quentin Road Baptist Church and the students of Dayspring Bible College. Ken gave brass instrument lessons to the college students and was also a classroom helper in elementary grades of the Christian school. He loved working with the students.

Toward the end of March 2023, Ken was diagnosed with acute leukemia. He often said that he did not fear death as his eternal destiny was secure. Just seven weeks later he fell asleep in his recliner chair after a fall, due to his extreme weakness, and within a few hours, awoke in the presence of his Lord. Ken was 80 years old. A life well lived for his Savior.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at Quentin Road Baptist Church in Lake Zurich, IL on Saturday, May 20 at 1 p.m. – visitation starting at noon.
