Obituary

June was born in Chicago on Mar. 27, 1928. The Salstrom family moved to Glen Ellyn, IL and lived there until 1943 when we moved to Wheaton, IL. All three of us children went to Wheaton College schools from seventh grade through graduation from college. June took her first two years at Wheaton and then decided to transfer to the nursing school at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, IL. After she finished her three years of training at West Sub she returned to Wheaton College and graduated with a degree in nursing.

Dr. Edman, president of Wheaton College then asked her to become a faculty member at West Sub, but at the same time an opportunity  presented itself to go to South Africa and teach nursing to young ladies at the Mosvold Mission Hospital. She applied to TEAM and spent 20 years in Zululand as the head of the nursing school, as well as working in surgery and midwifery, before the government took over the hospital and the missionaries were no longer needed.

She came back to the U.S. to serve another 20 years in the candidate department of TEAM, recruiting and building relationships with new missionaries.

After retiring from TEAM, she moved to Colorado Springs, CO, where she helped in the office of Evergreen, a ministry in China. She attended a Chinese church and taught English as a second language.

After her time in CO, she decided that she wanted to be near her family, and she moved to Holmstad Retirement Center in Batavia, IL.  Here she attended Christ the King Church, and taught a Sunday School for  children.  She was well-loved by her family, friends and everyone she came in contact with.

June's sister Marilyn Kennard and husband (Ken) preceded her in death along with her sister-in-law (Vera), niece (Becky) and nephew (David E.). June is survived by her brother, David W., two nieces, Ruth Durkin (Tom). and Rhesa Hansen (Bruce), and nephew Ken Kennard. She also had several great and great great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Covenant Living at the Holmstad, 700 W Fabyan Pkwy, Batavia, IL 60510.  Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 until the time of service.
