Judith A. De Poe
September 28, 1936 – January 24, 2022
Judith A. De Poe, 85, a longtime resident of Wheaton, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 24, 2022, while at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois, during her battle with lymphoma and colon cancer. The granddaughter of a Baptist preacher, she was born on September 28, 1936, in Charleston, Maine, to Calvin and Ruth Hutchinson, moved in her childhood to Chicago and then Wheaton with her mother and stepfather, Orin Elfstrom , and graduated in 1958 from Wheaton College, where she met her first husband, William Liou . The couple had three children, Peter, Timothy and Lisa.
Judy found true enjoyment and passion in working for 29 years as a copy editor for Tyndale House Publishers in Carol Stream, Illinois. She frequently exclaimed to those who asked what work she did, "Imagine reading the Bible and getting paid for it!" After retiring in 2004, she immensely enjoyed gardening, and every year made her rounds to the area's nurseries with her discerning eye to find plants that she nurtured and loved during the growing season. She also volunteered for many years as a telephone counselor at the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College, where she would minister and pray with those calling to speak to someone during televised Billy Graham crusades.
Judy is survived by her beloved husband of 15 years, Richard De Poe, sister Debra (James) Costas, son Timothy Liou , daughter Lisa (Steven) Shebar, a nd g randchildren Kayla , Benjamin and Michael Shebar. Her family rejoices that s he is now in heaven where s he is no longer in pain and has been joyfully reunited with her beloved oldest child, Peter Liou , and many other friends and family.
