Philip J. R. Equi, age 85, formerly of Wheaton, died Friday, September 28 at home in Sugar Grove. He was born on September 12, 1922 in Maywood to Joseph and Evelyn Equi.
He was a graduate of DePaul University College of Law, and engaged int the practice of law in Illinois as a lawyer with the Federal Trade Commission 1951 - 1953; was an Associate State's Attorney in Cook County 1953 - 1975. Was in private practice of law in Oak Park Illinois, as a member of the firm of Equi, Farwell, Rickelman & Proteau 1957 - 1977; was an associate Circuit Judge in the 19th Judicial District from 1977 to 1992. When he retired he was a member of the Illinois Bar Association; Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, Du Page County Bar Association, and the Justinian Society of Lawyers, Du Page County Chapter, where he served as President from 1983 - 1984. A U.S. Army Veteran, Judge Equi served in the 103rd Infantry Division during W.W.II.
He is survived by three sons, Philip C. Equi, Mark J. Equi and Jason J.R. Equi, three daughters, Leslie R. Murphy, Jody E. Shamansky and Kristin J. Equi; five grandchildren, Stacy and Geoffrey Serednesky, Samantha and Samuel Shamansky and Nicholas Sierawski, his sisters, Marion Shire and Lotus Zarat and one great-grandchild on the way. He is also survived by four nephews, two nieces and his former wife, Jeline V. Equi.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph P. Equi and his parents.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 30, from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, where a funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
