Joyce M. Mitchell, age 69, a resident of Winfield, Illinois, died in her sleep on Monday, September 29. She was born on November 3, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Clare and Evelyn Nebergall.
Joyce grew up in Tipton, Iowa where she graduated from high school. After graduating from Tipton High school, she attended St. Luke's hospital School of Nursing in Davenport Iowa and graduated in 1959. She specialized in pediatric nursing in Iowa, Denver, Boston, and became established in Chicago. Within the Chicago area, she worked as a nurse at Children's Hospital, Weiss Hospital, Central DuPage Hospital, and most recently, CNS Home Healthcare. Her volunteering activities included DuPage Community Clinic, her local food pantry, and area homeless shelters.
She was an avid walker, swimmer, and loved to travel, but most importantly, enjoyed fellowship with her family and friends.
She is survived by three sons, Lascelles Mitchell Jr. of Texas, Michael (Jen) Mitchell of California, and Mark Mitchell of Illinois, her mother, Evelyn Nebergall, three brothers, Wayne (Marilyn) Nebergall, Keith (Judy) Nebergall, and Marlin (Peg) Nebergall, her many nieces and nephews, and her former husband, Lascelles Mitchell Sr. of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 1, at 11:00 a.m. at Evangel Baptist Church, 1900 Manchester Rd. in Wheaton, IL.
