IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joyce L.
Gibson
December 21, 1928 – July 23, 2023
Joyce L. Gibson was promoted to Heaven on July 23, 2023. She was 94 years old. Joyce was born to Vernon and Katherine Gibson (nee Oliver) in Toronto, Canada. She is survived and will be dearly missed by her sister Florence Gibson, nieces Anna (Gil) Oliveira, Sarah Jordan-Banda, Sharon, Nancy and Peter Gibson, great nieces Kailee Watkins, Viviana Jordan-Banda and great nephew Brady Jordan-Banda. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Katherine Gibson, Dorothy Gibson and Grace Jordan and by her brother Peter Gibson. Joyce spent the first four years of her life in Africa where her parents were Missionaries. She attended college at Prairie Bible Institute and moved to the Wheaton area after she graduated. Joyce was the Editor in Chief at Scripture Press for over 40 years and continued to write and edit a monthly devotional for Haven Ministries until her mid-eighties. Joyce loved to travel and even traveled to Egypt when she was in her seventies. If that was not enough, during that trip she also climbed a pyramid.
Joyce was a devout Christian and she exemplified all of the fruits of the spirit and unconditional love. She always put everyone's needs before her own. She was generous and kind and always made everyone who knew her feel like they were the most special person and she was honored to know them. Joyce was also a prayer warrior and many lives were changed (and saved) by her powerful prayers. Joyce also loved children. She taught Sunday School at many churches in Wheaton and Glen Ellyn. Those who were fortunate enough to attend Miss Joyce's Sunday School class would often be met with one of her delicious baked treats, or what she was most known for, her hot gingerbread cake.
Joyce's passions in life were drawing children to Jesus, storytelling and reading. When Joyce was in her 90's now blind and unable to teach her beloved Sunday School, or read, prayed and received a vision for a library in Uganda. Joyce then acted and gave generous contributions to Mountain Children's Ministry to construct the ONLY library for miles around in these peasant farming communities of Kabale.
Started during COVID in April 2020 and completed in January 2021 this structure was built with the help of local orphans. The library was named after Joyce and is for the entire community, not just MCM children. Joy's question was "How are the local children being blessed?" God's Joy Library was her answer. It is dedicated to Joyce with a plaque sunk into the cement entering the front door….."Welcome to God's Joy Library, The answered prayer of Joyce Gibson who asked, listened and loved us well." The same holds true for all who knew Joyce, we have been blessed and loved well.
