Obituary

Jonathan S. Sceggel, 69, of Elgin, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on March 30, 2025. He passed away at home from kidney failure. He was born on October 4, 1955, in Hartford, Connecticut.

Jon grew up exploring the woods around his family's home in Glastonbury, Connecticut. He enjoyed building forts, model rocketry, and science experiments. At summer camp in New Hampshire, he participated in archery, swimming, and riflery. As a teen he took a locksmithing course that proved useful throughout his life. When he was 16 he came to faith in Christ by asking God to save him from his sins, then he eagerly shared the gospel with his high school classmates. Jon graduated from Glastonbury High School in 1973, then earned a BA in psychology from Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts in 1977. He met his wife Kim (Whipple) at Gordon, and they both worked for a summer on the college ministry staff at Park Street Church in Boston. While at Gordon he enjoyed photography and Bible studies with Park Street friends.

After college Jon and a group of friends moved to Philadelphia to share a house and lead a youth group together. In Philadelphia Jon studied marketing research at Drexel University and earned his MBA in 1979. Then he moved to Elgin, Illinois to conduct marketing research for David C. Cook Publishing. Soon after that, on July 5, 1980, he married Kim. His hobbies included woodworking, science fiction, reading theology, and home and car repairs.

After several accounting positions Jon began his own business, earned his CPA license, and became owner  of Caldwell, Coren, and Sceggel, an accounting firm in Darien, Illinois. He served on church boards and committees, and served for several years as board chair for Koinonia House, a Christian ministry to ex-offenders. His interests in theology and evangelism continued throughout his life, and he found great joy in sharing the gospel at Bethel Presbyterian Church's book table at the College of DuPage.

Jon is survived by his wife Kim, son Tim (Allie), grandson Strotman, and brother Mark (Judy) as well as five nephews and nieces and their families. His parents, Elton J. Sceggel and Constance C. (Carlson) Sceggel, preceded him in death.

Jon's memorial service will be held at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 North Main Street, Wheaton, on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. Visitation with the family will be held from 10 a.m. until the service begins. All guests are invited to a luncheon after the service at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 1401 South Naperville Road, Wheaton, a short distance from the funeral home.
