The beginning of a new year on earth was the start of new life in heaven for Rev. Dr. John Taejong Yu. He went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 1, 2021, peacefully breathing his last breath with his beloved wife by his side. He was born November 14, 1930, in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr. Yu graduated from Seoul National University after having served in the Korean Air Force. He married the love of his life, Susan Joungsook Kim, on March 10, 1962.  He immigrated with their two young children to the United States where he received a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering and worked as a chemical engineer at the Carborundum Company in Niagara Falls, NY.  He later began a second career as an award-winning insurance agent, in the Chicagoland area, for Mutual Trust Life Insurance Company.

His Christian faith was an important part of his life, and he served as an elder at Buffalo Korean Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, NY and Korean West Alliance Church in Wheaton, IL.  He also was actively involved at two "American" churches, the First Presbyterian Church in Niagara Falls, NY, and Downers Grove, IL. His faith led him to return to graduate studies to earn a second Master's Degree in Intercultural Missions from Wheaton College in 1989 at the age of 59. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in America and served as a pastor at Han Maum Presbyterian Church, a Korean church in Prospect Heights, before being called into service as a missionary in South Korea. There he served as Senior Pastor at Eun Hae (Grace) Church for 10 years.  In 2002, he retired and returned to the Chicago area. His deep love for God fueled his commitment to supporting the next generation of Christ-followers as a member of Living Water Alliance Church and Wellspring Alliance Church, both in Wheaton, IL.  Dr. Yu was a longtime member of the Association of Retired Korean American Pastors and Eun Mok Church, for retired Korean-American pastors and their wives. He also served the Association as its president in 2012.

Ever the lifelong learner, Dr. Yu earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies from Trinity College of the Bible and Trinity Theological Seminary in Newburgh, IN in 2012 at the age of 81.  He then continued to pursue missions work past his retirement through his research and writings on the history of Christianity in China and growth of the Church in Far East Asia as the Co-founder and Senior Consultant of the Institute of Biblical Integration. In addition to his educational and scholarly pursuits, he was an avid gardener, carefully tending to his vegetable and flower beds with the knowledge gained through his scientific understanding of chemistry. His interdisciplinary life passions are a reflection of the ways that God uses all things together for good.

As the first member of his family to become a Christian at the age of 15, Dr. Yu led his entire family to faith in Christ. He believed in the importance of the next generation having connection to family roots and faith. It brought him immense joy to play and spend time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His influence extended beyond the spiritual care and nurture of his family and included assisting extended family immigrating to and planting roots in America. He truly desired for each family member to develop an intimate relationship with God. His commitment and love for his family remained strong to his last day on this side of paradise. He will be remembered by all for his smile, kindness, and ministry of sharing the love of Jesus in tangible ways.

Rev. Dr. John T. Yu is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susan Yu, four children, Dr. Sandi (Tom) Rueger, Dan (Jackie) Yu, Dr. Paul (Joanna) Yu, and Dr. Christine Yu (Gary Woods), 10 grandchildren,  Rachel (Joe) Miebach, Hannah, Matthew, Morgan, Erik, Maiya, Evan, Elena, Tristan, and Elizabeth, and two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Felix, as well as two brothers, Tae Il (Myung Duk) Yu, Tai Won (Kiae) Yu, and one sister, Dr. Taeim Hahn. He also was beloved by numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Yong Jin Yu and Soon Sook Lee, sister Esther Taein (Rev. Dr. Ilsik Samuel) Choe, and brother-in-law, Rev. Abraham Changwon Hahn.

Due to the pandemic, the funeral service will be held privately, and private interment will be held at Chapel Hill Gardens West in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. 세상의 사람들이 2021년 새해를 맞이할 때 유태종 박사는 하늘나라에서 새로운 인생을 시작했습니다. 2021년 1월 1일 금요일 소천한 그는 사랑하는 아내가 지켜보는 가운데 그는 평화롭게 숨을 거두었습니다.

고 유태종 박사는 1930년 11월 14일 대한민국 서울에서 태어났습니다. 대한민국 공군에서 군 복무를 마치고 서울 대학교를 졸업한 유 박사는 1962년 3월 10일 인생의 반려자인 수잔 김정숙 사모와 결혼했습니다. 이후 두 자녀와 함께 도미한 유 박사는 버팔로 소재 뉴욕 주립대학교에서 화학 공학 석사 학위를 받았습니다. 대학원 졸업 후 뉴욕 나이애가라 폴스에 소재한 카보런덤 사에서 화학 엔지니어로 근무했던 유 박사는 뮤추얼 트러스트로 직장을 옮기고 이후 우수 보험 설계사로 선정되며 제 2의 경력을 시작했습니다.

무엇보다 유 박사에게 있어 '신앙'은 삶에 있어서 중요한 부분이었습니다. 그는 뉴욕 버팔로에 위치한 버팔로 한인 장로 교회와 일리노이 휘튼에 위치한 웨스트 얼라이언스  (West Alliance Church) 한인 교회에서 장로로 봉직했습니다. 그는 또한 뉴욕 나이아가라 폴스와 일리노이 다우너스 그로브에 소재한 미국인 교회 - 제일 장로교회 - 에서도 적극적으로 활동했습니다.

이후 59세가 된 1989년 휘튼 칼리지 문화 선교학과에서 두 번째 석사 학위를 취득하며 그의 신앙은 또 다른 전환점을 마련하게 됐습니다. 유 박사는 미주 장로교회에서 목사 안수를 받은 후,  한국에서 선교 사역을 감당하기 직전까지, 프로스펙트 하이츠에 소재한 에베소 한인 장로 한마음 교회(Han Maum Presbyterian Church)에서 첫 목회 사역을 시작했습니다. 한국에서는 선교 사역과 더불어 은혜(Grace) 교회 담임 목사로 10년 간 목회 활동을 펼쳤습니다. 그 후 2002년 은퇴한 유 목사는 시카고로 돌아왔지만 하나님에 대한 깊은 사랑을 품고 일리노이 휘튼에 있는 리빙 워터 연합 교회(Living Water Alliance Church)와 웰스프링 연합 교회(Wellspring Alliance Church) 성도로서 신앙 생활을 계속 이어가며 특별히 차세대 크리스천 지원과 양성에 온 힘을 쏟았습니다.  존 유 박사는 1993년 창립 이래로 미국 은퇴 한인 목회자와 그 배우자 협회 (은퇴목사회, 은목회) 의 은목교회의 오랜 회원이였고 2012 년에는 협회 회장으로 봉사했습니다

유 목사는, 평생  학습하는 마음으로, 고령임에도 학업에 대한 열정 또한 계속 이어 갔습니다. 81세가 된 2012년 인디애나 뉴 버그에 소재한 트리니티 신학대학교와 동 대학원에서 박사 학위를 받았습니다. 선교에 대한 열정은 중국 기독교의 역사와 극동 아시아 지역 교회의 성장에 관한 깊은 이해와 연구로 이어졌습니다. 공동 창립자이자 수석 컨설턴트로 다양한 분야의 학문을 연계하는 '학제 간 연구(interdisciplinary)'에 온 열정을 기울인 유 목사의 삶은 하나님께서 그를 온전히 사용하셨다는 것을 반증하는 것이기도 합니다. 하지만 유 목사는 화학 관련 전문가로서의 지식을 활용해 텃밭의 채소와 화단 돌보기를 사랑했던 평범한 정원사이기도 했습니다.

15세에 가족 중에서는 처음으로 기독교 인이 된 유 박사는 이내 가족 전체가 그리스도 인으로 거듭나는 축복을 경험했습니다. 그는 신앙의 근간이 다음 세대로 이어져야 한다는 것을 매우 중요하게 여겼습니다. 이러한 그의 신념은 자녀와 손자 및 증손자들과 놀아주고 함께 시간을 보내는 크나큰 기쁨을 가져왔고, 무엇보다 그의 영향력은 가족들이 이민자로서 미국 땅에서 뿌리를 내릴 수 있도록 돕는 것은 물론 가족들에 대한 영적인 돌봄과 양육으로 확장되었습니다. 그는 모든 가족들이 하나님과의 친밀한 관계를 발전시키기를 진정으로 원했습니다. 그의 가족에 대한 헌신과 사랑은 삶의 마지막 순간까지 이어졌습니다. 그는 친절하고 환한 미소, 그리고 주님의 사랑을 전하고 나누는 확신에 찬 사역에 열정을 쏟았던 이로 모든 이들에게 기억될 것입니다.

유태종 박사는 사랑하는 아내 수잔 유와 58년의 결혼 생활을 이어왔고 네 자녀 성원 루거 박사 (탐 루거), 유 완동 (재키), 유의동 박사 (조애너), 유임숙 박사 (게리 우즈)를 슬하에 두었습니다. 10명의 손자 레이철 (조) 미바흐, 한나, 매튜, 모건, 에릭, 마이야, 에반, 트리스탄, 엘리자베스, 그리고 두 명의 증손자 소피아와 펠릭스를 두었습니다. 형제 자매로는 남동생 태일 (명덕) 유, 태원 (기애) 유, 여동생 한태임 박사가 있습니다. 그리고 여러명의 조카들에게  자상한 삼촌이셨습니다. 부모형제로는 유 박사에 앞서 소천한 고 유용진(부)과 고 이순숙(모), 이모 에스더 태인(사무엘 일식 목사), 처남 에이브라함 창원 한 목사가 있습니다.

팬데믹 상황을 감안해 장례예배는 비대면으로 진행됩니다. 함께 하기 원하시는 분은 온라인으로 참여할 수 있습니다. 하관예배 역시 유족들만 참여하며 오크브룩 테라스에 위치한 체플 힐 가든스 웨스트 묘역에서 드려질 예정입니다.
