John H. Marrs Jr., age 83, a resident of Friendship Village in Schaumburg and formerly of Elk Grove Village, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 4, 2015 after sustaining injuries from an automobile accident. He was born on September 18, 1931 in Chicago to John and Selma Marrs.
He graduated from the University of Minnesota and then earned a Master's of Divinity from Bethel Seminary in St. Paul. While at Bethel he met Joyce Teser and they were married on June 27, 1964. They served as missionaries in Brazil for 13 years. After returning from the mission field he served at the Baptist General Conference home office in Arlington Heights, IL. In recent years, he has been an active volunteer and resident at Friendship Village in Schaumburg. He was a member of Elk Grove Baptist Church for 28 years.
John's passion in life was his commitment to Christ. He also was actively involved in the Republican Party, and volunteered for Congressman Peter Roskam.
John was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, missionary, Bible teacher, a listener, a counselor, a confidant, and a prayer warrior; but, most of all he was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.
He is survived by two daughters, Becky (Hillary) Adams of Wyoming, MN, and Raquel (Rick) Nelsen of Elk Grove Village, IL; five grandchildren, Melissa, and Christopher deWidt, and Julia, Jenna, and Joelle Nelsen; one sister, Miriam (Pete) Romin, and his brother-in-law Karl Teser.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Joyce E. Marrs, and his parents.
A visitation will be held on Friday,April 10, from 3-9 P.M. at Elk Grove Baptist Church, 801 Beisner Road, in Elk Grove Village, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 11, at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be private at Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven, MA.
