John Aldor
Mahoney
June 10, 1982 – September 21, 2018
John Aldor Mahoney, age 36, a resident of Riverside, IL, went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 21, 2018. He was an outstanding young man who did well in school and business but was better defined by love of family and service to others, especially those who also had cancer. He was born June 10, 1982 in Hastings, Minnesota to Dennis and Judith Mahoney.
He is survived by his wife of 6 years, Allyson Chen Mahoney, two children, Dennis (age 4) and Matthew (age 1), his parents, Dennis and Judith Mahoney of Wheaton, two younger siblings, Grant Mahoney and Rose (Steven) Anthony, maternal grandparents, Aldor and DeElda Rose of Fairmont, Minnesota and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Dorothy Mahoney of Needham, Massachusetts.
John grew up in Wheaton, IL graduating from Wheaton Warrenville South High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from DePaul University in Chicago in 3 1/2 years while working full time at National Marine Manufacturers Association. He was an entrepreneur, starting Neoconcepts, his own web design business, at the age of 16. After graduating from college he first worked as an IT consultant for several companies and then as an employee for Societe Generale, a French financial firm. While there, he was a well-respected, caring and innovative employee rising to the rank of IT director when brain cancer curtailed his plans. His cancer also halted his studies for a M.Sc. in Biomedical Informatics at the University of Chicago.
John recognized the humanity in all people and gave with his heart. On holidays he would bring pizza to the homeless on Wacker Drive and share stories and time with them. In recent years, he was working to coalesce his analytical skills, love of cooking and fitness, unending optimism, and generous heart to lead others to more positive cancer outcomes. He never once complained nor lost his smile or love for those in his life.
John was an avid cyclist who biked throughout the US. Most memorably, John joined Team Livestrong, a cancer support organization, cycling across Iowa during RAGBRAI 2015 with his father, wife, and infant son Dennis. He went on to become a Livestrong Leader in his free time, inspiring others who were battling cancer. He used his passion for cooking to fight his own cancer while adhering to the ketogenic diet for a remarkable 6 years. John loved nothing more than to cook and share delicious and flavorful meals with his friends and family.
