John Kaenel passed away on March 7, 2014 at the age of 91. Born February 5, 1923 to John and Louise Kaenel, nee Gerold, at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, and raised in Chicago. He graduated from St. Michael Central High School, was drafted, served in the US Army in Texas and Germany, and attended Blackburn College before working in his father's business. After moving to Wheaton he married Rosemary Murphy, worked at Howard Foundry, attended St. Procopius College, then Benedictine University and after graduation , taught for 26 years in the Addison Schools. On retirement he obtained a master gardener certificate from the U of I Extension, and volunteered for twelve years at Cantigny, several nursing homes and Wheaton PADS. He was an active member of St. Michael parish, Member of the Knights of Columbus, and avid bridge and pinnocle player and ardent gardener. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary, five children, Grace Krall, Bonnie Johnson, James, Judy Elliott, and Joseph (Gail) fourteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, his sister, Patricia of Maryland and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Richard and David (Karen), his sisters, Elizabeth (Gene) Pecaro, Mary Catherine (Charles) Petersen and Joan (John) Harrop. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 11, from 5 until 9 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton where prayers will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. A mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Church followed by a graveside service at St. Michael Cemetery.
