John Daniel "Dan" Thorne, age 69, a lifelong resident of the Wheaton, IL area, succumbed to his battle with cancer on Saturday, February 9, 2013. He died at home surrounded by his children. He was born July 10, 1943 at Delnor Hospital in St. Charles, IL.

Dan served in the U.S. Navy from 1965-71, stationed first at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois, then on a submarine tender at the Holy Loch base in Scotland, and finally at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia. After his military service he returned to Wheaton and worked as a property manager for the family business for several decades, and then as a handyman until his retirement.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, keeping up with the latest automotive trends and watching NASCAR, and applying his engineering skills to solving problems. A true Chicagoan, he loved WGN radio, the Bears, and the Cubs.

He is survived by his four children with his former wife Carol Thorne of Wheaton, IL: Amy (Michael) Collins of Yorkville, IL, Abigail (Michael) Birt of Carol Stream, IL, Calvin (Amanda) Thorne of Madison, WI, and Cameron (Vanessa) Thorne of Green Mountain Falls, CO; his six grandchildren Erienne, Thomas, Ryan, Avery, Gwendolyn, and Tyler; his five younger siblings Peter (Donna) Thorne of Duncanville, TX, James (Mary Jane) Thorne of Elizabeth, IL, Priscilla (Dave Roche) Stoyanof of San Francisco, CA, Rosemary (Ted) White of East Dubuque, IL, and Sally (Dwight) Jacobsen of Midland Park, NJ; and his special friend Marie Zandie of Carol Stream, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Sue (Gates) Thorne, and his step-mother Shirley Crandall Thorne.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Both events are located at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St, Wheaton, IL. Interment will be private.
