John "Jack" Almond, age 94, a resident of Warrenville, IL, died July 23, 2011, of natural causes. He was born December 12, 1916 in Fairhaven, MA.
Jack's parents, William and Alice, were British citizens residing in the United States. When Jack was five, he returned with his parents to their hometown of Lytham St. Anne's, England where he spent his childhood. Jack chose to join the United States Army during World War II. While in the service, he met his wife, Charlotte. Following the war they settled in Lombard, IL where they raised their two children.
Jack obtained his Doctorate in Optometry as well as a Master's Degree and Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education. He worked briefly as an optometrist and then changed his career to education. He retired after having served as a Principal at Laurel Hill School in Hanover Park, IL for many years. In his retirement, he was active in the community, including volunteering at the DuPage Convalescent Center and helping with electrical maintenance in his subdivision. He published two works of fiction, which can be found at the Warrenville Public Library.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Charlotte; his son, Brian (Lisa) Almond of Yorba Linda, CA; his daughter, Charlene (Lee) Rutledge of Sugar Grove, IL; granddaughter, Lisa (Carmen) Gaspero of Warrenville, IL; grandson, Scott Almond of Yorba Linda, CA; four great-granddaughters, Evangelina, Isabella, Gabriella and Raffaella Gaspero, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 26, 2011 from 4-6 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Irene Church, 28W441 Warrenville Rd, in Warrenville, IL. Interment will follow at Warrenville Cemetery in Warrenville, IL.
