Joaquin L. Crawford, age 82, a 20 year resident of Lombard, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on Wednesday, August 22, after a long illness, surrounded by her family. She was born June 10, 1930 to Ralph Victor and Raethel Friar.
Joaquin grew up on a farm outside of Warren, Indiana. She graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University where she met Roy E. Crawford. They were married on August 16, 1953. Roy served as a pastor in various Wesleyan Churches in the Chicagoland area and Joaquin was a loving and supportive pastor's wife. She played the organ and piano and began teaching piano lessons when she was 16 and taught privately until last March.
Joaquin was a music teacher in various public schools from the 1960's until the 1980's. In the 1970's and 1980's she supported Roy as he traveled the Illinois District of The Wesleyan Church as the District Superintendent.
Her vital relationship with Jesus Christ was evidenced in her ministry to her piano students and in the countless letters she wrote to family and friends. In recent years she has enjoyed ministering at Wheaton Wesleyan Church in Children's Ministry and Missions. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, embroidery and watercolor painting.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Pastor Roy Crawford, two daughters, Christine (Thomas) Bumgardner of Chillicothe, Ohio and Angela (Scott) Killian of Winfield, five grandchildren, Bethany, Wesley, January, Amber and Elijah, six great-grandchildren, five siblings, Robert Friar, Ruth Woodbury, Marrianna Stricker, Donald Friar and Geneva Teichrow, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 25, at 10 a.m. at Wheaton Wesleyan Church, 1300 S. President St., Wheaton, where friends may visit with the family from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m.. Further services and interment will be held at Fairview Methodist Church and Fairview Cemetery in Rockbridge, Ohio.
