Obituary

Joan Sheehy dedicated her life to being kind, thoughtful and overwhelmingly generous to everyone. She had an infectious sense of humor and read the New York Times cover to cover nearly every day. The only thing she loved more than gardening and helping the poor and disadvantaged was having a political argument defending social values and the equitable rights of all people.
Born on October 26, 1934, to Michael and Mary Sheehy (nee O'Connor), Joan and her brother Mike were raised on Chicago's South Side. After graduating from Visitation High School she joined the convent and became part of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. As a nun, Joan taught underprivileged inner-city kids in Milwaukee, New York City and Washington DC. She went on to earn two Master's degrees specializing in history and teaching. After the convent, "Aunt Joan" taught in the Chicago Public Schools for over 30 years, focusing on educating children with learning disabilities.
Joan's love for traveling, playing bridge, and the theater brought her and her countless friends incredibly close over the years. Her smile, fierce spirit and love of nature will be missed by all her family and friends that loved her very much.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa or to the Audubon Society.
