Jerome R. Hohmann, age 91, a resident of Wheaton, IL, went to be with the Lord, peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. He was born June 12, 1924 in Buckley, a small country town in south/central Illinois, to a Lutheran school teacher and his wife, Edward and Marie Hohmann.
Jerome graduated high school in Cleveland, Ohio in 1942. During the war he worked at a war plant in Cleveland. He attended Concordia Teachers College in River Forest for two years then went on to Washburne Trade School in Chicago where he graduated as a chef. He worked as a cook and chef manager at Lutherbrook in Addison, Scanda House in Wheaton, Wheaton Academy and Wheaton College. For many years, beginning in 1971, he worked as the Chef Manager for the Benedictine Sisters at the Sacred Heart Monastery in Lisle.
On April 29, 1951, he married the "love of his life," Adella Schortau. They raised five children in Wheaton, where they were very involved at St. John Lutheran Church. At church he served as an usher, was involved in the JOY group, but was best known for serving a Roast Port and Sauerkraut dinner for 30 years, from 1965 until 1995.
He enjoyed playing on the St. John Dartball team, collecting coins and was an avid sports fan of Chicago teams. He enjoyed music, especially swing and jazz, and played the drums in college. He was an outgoing person who enjoyed people, most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Adella, four children, Edward Paul Hohmann of Wheaton, Chrystel Schortau Hohmann of Idaho, Rita L. Hohmann-Graf of Wheaton and Lisa M. Hohmann of Wheaton, one grandson, Aaron Elliott Hohmann of Idaho, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Jerome Hohmann, son-in-law, Walter T. Graf, three brothers, George, Tim, and Vince and a sister Dorothy Hanson.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 20, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 410 N. Cross St., Wheaton, IL 60187. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery.
