Jeffrey O'Brien
Sargeant
July 26, 1944 – April 9, 2018
Jeffrey O'Brien Sargeant was born on July 26, 1944, in St. Philip, Barbados, the 2nd child to James and Faustina Sargeant. He moved with his family to Harlem, NYC at the age of 14. He honorably served in the Navy upon graduating from high school, having the opportunity to travel to Germany and Italy sparking his passion for traveling. After his service in the Navy, Jeff attended California State University - Northridge where ehe obtained his bachelors degree in electrical engineering.
In 1975, while in LA, Jeff met LaShaune, his wife of 41 years. In a letter to his mother he said, "Approaching 31, looking no older than 25, and feeling no younger than 21, I was a little apprehensive about my wifely future. However, one day there she was. I didn't know her name or where she came from, but my sixth sense told me that she was the one."
Jeff and LaShaune started their life together in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he worked as an electrical engineer for BP Amoco. They raised their two daughters, Quiana and Toni, there until 1989 when he was transferred to the Chicago area. The family settled in Carol Stream, IL where Quiana and Toni continued to flourish. In 1995, with Quiana approaching college age and Toni beginning high school, Jeff and LaShaune decided they had more love to give and adopted their 3rd child, Justin.
Jeff was a beloved and humble member of his community. His strong faith in God was the foundation of his life and drove his desire to serve with a smile wherever he could. He was known for kind words and quick wit.
After a long and well fought battle with cancer, Jeff passed away on Monday, April 9th, 2018. He was deeply loved and will be truly missed. He is survived by his wife LaShaune, children Quiana (Gilbert), Toni and Justin, grandchildren Jordyn, Alyssa, and coming soon Emmanuel Jeffrey, sister Roslyn, brother Victor, and nephew Todd (Thea).
A visitation will be held Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home in Wheaton, IL. A celebration of life will be held during the summer.
