Jeanne “Betsy” Oswald, of Winfield, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, at the age of 84. Born in Oak Park on April 27, 1942, Betsy was the daughter of Jack and Jeanne Groote. She graduated from Wheaton Central High School in 1960.
Betsy was married to her beloved husband, Ralph, for 62 years. Ralph preceded her in death in September 2025. Together, they built a loving family and shared a lifetime of memories.
Betsy was a devoted mother to Elizabeth (Steve) Wheeler, Caroline (David) Woodward, Jeff (Gina) Oswald, and Katie (Steve) Klingberg, and a beloved grandmother to Jack, Josh, Payton, and Tabitha. Her family was the center of her life, and she took great pride in each of them.
Betsy was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton, where she was an active and devoted member of the church community. For many years, she helped run the church’s PADS program, offering support, hospitality, and compassion to those in need. She often enlisted her family to join her in helping with the program.
Strong and independent, Betsy lived life on her own terms. She loved to cook, and her kitchen was a place where family gathered, stories were shared, and memories were made. She especially enjoyed sharing family recipes with her children and grandchildren, passing along not only treasured recipes but also the traditions and memories behind them. Through cooking, she found one of the most meaningful ways to care for and connect with the people she loved.
Betsy will be remembered for her strength, independence, warmth, generosity, and deep devotion to her family and community. Her love, traditions, and the many memories she created will live on through her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Groote, her sister-in-law Audrey (Erik) Oswald, and her niece Stephanie Olivarez.
A service honoring Betsy’s life will take place on Saturday, October 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Chapel, 130 N. West Street, Wheaton. Following the service, a Celebration of Life will be held at Cooper’s Corner, 27W150 Roosevelt Road, Winfield, Illinois, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Family and friends are warmly welcome to join in remembering and celebrating Betsy.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
