Jean Louise (Peterson) Rhoades suddenly entered her Heavenly home on Sunday morning, November 27, 2016, at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL. Born to Harold Peterson and Dorothy Moorhead (Peterson) in Rock Island, IL, Jean grew up in Moline, IL and Davenport, IA.
She graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1958, and earned a degree in Elementary Education from Wheaton College in 1961. For the next 35 years, "Mrs. Ross," then "Mrs. Rhoades" was a beloved fourth grade teacher at Emerson Elementary School in Wheaton, IL. Jean completed a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling at Northern Illinois University, and was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma International (society of professional women educators), serving on the Illinois Women in Arts Committee and Women's Department Club of Wheaton. Jean was married to the love of her life, George David Rhoades, for 26 years, and they loved going to the theatre, concerts, visiting family and friends, and traveling the world together. After George's death in 2012, Jean moved into a lovely apartment at Wyndemere in Wheaton in December 2013, and enjoyed life there with old and new friends, along with her two Burmese cats. A long-time alto member of the Silvertones, Jean loved singing, piano, and poetry. A committed Christian, Jean attended Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Naperville and served on the board of Grace and Peace Chaplaincy.
She is survived by brothers, Kevin (Cindy) Moorhead and Craig (Laura) Moorhead; stepchildren, David H. (Rebecca) Rhoades and Caroline E. (Jerry) Felix (nee Rhoades); grandsons, Jude H. Felix and George B. Rhoades; and several cousins.
A visitation is planned for Thursday, December 1st from 12:00 p.m. (noon) until 2:00 p.m., with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 Main St., in Wheaton, IL, with the Rev. RitaKay Lochner officiating.
Interment will be at Wheaton Cemetery in a private ceremony.
