Miner
October 10, 1929 – June 28, 2020
Jean Bond Miner, 90, of Carol Stream, IL died on Sunday June 28 th at home. Jean was born to Florence Kirkpatrick and Louis Henry Bond of Buffalo NY on October 10 th 1929. She graduated as valedictorian from Bennett High School in 1947 and attended Mt Holyoke College, one of the top women's colleges. Jean wanted to choose a challenging major, and decided on Physics, graduating in 1951. While at Mt Holyoke she met Amos Judson (Jud) Miner, also of Buffalo NY, who was studying chemistry at Wesleyan University.
Upon graduation from Mt. Holyoke she was hired by Yerkes Research Lab in Buffalo, a part of E. I. du Pont de Nemours. Her salary was the second highest of any graduate of Mt Holyoke that year. At the time Jean was the only woman in the lab. She worked there until her marriage to Jud in December of 1951. Jud's career took them to TX, PA, IL, MA, NJ, DE, MO and finally back to IL.
Jean was a wonderful mother to five children: David, Virginia, Amos, Caroline, and Lydia. After the children were older, she restarted her career at University of Delaware, later serving as registrar at George Williams College, Webster University and Fontbonne College.
Jean enjoyed being mother and grandmother to her ever growing clan. She loved volleyball, playing bridge, her local MLB and NHL teams, fishing, baking and singing in the church choir. Jean had a remarkable ability to connect with those around her. She served as an Elder and Stephen Minster in the Presbyterian Church USA.
Jean was predeceased by her parents and her brother David Eaton Bond. She is survived by Jud and all of her five children, nine grandchildren and six great-children.
A memorial gathering will take place at a later date. Contributions in honor of Jean may be made to Morton Arboretum.
