Jean Gossett Gaines, age 92, a 50-year resident of Wheaton, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014 due to complications of pneumonia. Jean was born October 26, 1921 in Yuma, CO, the daughter of Goldie and William Gossett.
She graduated from Eastern Illinois University majoring in Home Economics. She thoroughly enjoyed a career in food production management, first at the Pentagon during World War II and again, in later years, at Marshall Field and Co. She married John "Jack" Wesley Gaines in 1948 and spent many happy years as a homemaker raising their two daughters. She was a long-standing member of the
First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton
. She also belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Women's Department Club of Wheaton, and Art Institute of Chicago. She participated in and contributed to numerous charities.
She is survived by her husband, Jack; daughters, Ann Reed Gaines and Kay Gaines (David) Griffy; granddaughter, Galina Griffy; nieces, Lynn (John) Old, Karen (Robert) Sykes and Melissa Neeley; and nephew, William (Joann) Miller.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Suzanne (William) Owen and Marian (William) Miller.
A memorial tribute will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, with a visitation continuing after the service until 3:00 p.m. Private burial services were held at Wheaton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice.
