Obituary

Janice "Jan" Popp, age 83, a resident of Wheaton, IL, died June 24, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Jan was born October 7, 1942, in Lockport, NY, the third of four daughters of the late Raymond and Ethel Meahl. Jan lived a life defined by service, generosity and faith.

She graduated from Houghton College, and received her Master’s in Education at the

University of Buffalo. She married Richard Popp in 1964, and after three years of

teaching, stayed home with her children and worked on the family dairy farm in Castile, NY. Jan was deeply involved in Castile Baptist Church (over 40 years) and The Compass Church (Wheaton). She taught Sunday School, VBS, Pioneer Girls, and Release Time, sang in the choir, served on many committees, and hosted many events. Jan was also involved with the American Red Cross and was chairman of the Wyoming County Red Cross for several years.

Jan was a woman of boundless energy. If there was a need, she would seek to fill it, whether it be someone needing a visit, an encouraging note, a meal or a party. She loved gathering family and friends, as well as visiting missionaries or international students, around a beautifully appointed table. She spent many hours each week during her later years serving the community, and building community, at Repeat Boutique in Wheaton, IL.

Jan thoughtfully invested herself in people. Whether it was planning for the annual grandchildren’s “Cousins Camp” or thinking through the questions she would ask at a Sunday lunch, she delighted in learning more about people’s lives and invited others into the wonder of humanity.

Jan is survived by her children, Aileen (Edward) Miner, Richard "Rusty"

(Melinda) Popp, Pamela (Craig) Dutton, sisters Marilyn Law, Sharon (Anthony) Gould, and Phyllis (Wayne) Bowerman, eight grandchildren Carolyn Miner, Phillip Miner, Sarah Miner, Ruby Popp, Anna Popp, Andrew Beckelhymer, Abigail Beckelhymer, Maxwell Dutton; and one great-granddaughter Olivia Bullard. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, and a grandson, Tad Popp.

A visitation will be held on Thursday July 9, from 5-8pm at the Hultgren Funeral Home

(304 N Main St. Wheaton, IL) and a Memorial Funeral Service on Friday July 10, at 10am at College Church (332 E Seminary Ave., Wheaton IL).
