James Stewart, age 87, a resident of Glen Ellyn for 22 years, and recently of Winfield, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at home surrounded by his family. He was born January 29, 1928 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Jim was orphaned at a young age and was raised by his mother's best friend. Although he was encouraged to continue his academic education, he left school at fourteen to apprentice as a carpenter feeling a responsibility to contribute to the family raising him. He emigrated to Australia at the age of 21 and to the United States at 24. He married Virginia Van Pelt in June 1956 and had two children, Stephen and Sandra.
He met the Lord as his Savior at age 21 in Sydney, Australia during a street meeting of the Open Air Campaigners. He came to the U.S. to attend Bible School and later graduated from Moody Bible Institute. He was a union carpenter who specialized in building elaborate staircases in luxury homes. While working as a carpenter he also served as the pastor of Berwyn Bible Church and helped to start the Woodstock Bible Church. For many years he would provide church services for nursing homes and a psychiatric facility in Evanston.
He loved to travel all over the US and the world, including Europe, Scandinavia, Israel and Egypt. His free time was spent studying the Bible and remodeling numerous homes.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Ginny", two children, Stephen Donovan (Hilda) Stewart of Winfield and Sandra Elizabeth (Glenn) Kraiss of Wheaton, five grandchildren, Caleb (Amanda), Rachel, and Rebekah Stewart and Peter and Nathan Kraiss, one great-granddaughter, Olivia.
