Itsuo 'Tim' Yoshino, age 80, a resident of Carol Stream, IL died early Friday morning, May 1, 2015 at Central DuPage Hospital. He was born May 23, 1934 in Japan.
A gentle man. Respectful and reserved. Born in Japan during difficult times he came to America like so many before him - on a crowded boat with nothing but a small bag and the clothes on his back. He settled in Chicago determined to be a success.
Mr. Yoshino earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Illinois Tech and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A talented scholar, he was renown for his knowledge of ancient Native American culture and local history. A question posed to him on any subject would quickly reveal the depth and breadth of his incredible knowledge.
His expertise in both the technical and the aesthetic propelled him into a 42 year career as a broadcasting engineer at NBC. For several decades he was behind the camera for Chicago's 10 o'clock news on NBC5 and live sporting events around the country. Mr. Yoshino helped develop and perfect much of the technological magic that made live televIsion broadcasts dazzling.
Mr. Yoshino shaped a generation of men through his work with the Boy Scouts. For 30 years he served as a leader and mentor to Boy Scouts throughout Northern Illinois, especially Carol Stream's own Troop 32. He was most recently proud of earning the Wood Badge, which signifies completion of the highest level of adult Scout training available. Men and boys from all over the area can attribute their knowledge of the wilderness, woodcarving skills and knot tying abilities to Mr. Yoshino.
He married his one true love, Kathy, and together they raised two children, Brian and Lisa. He drew his strength and inspiration from his wife whom he loved beyond measure. Mr. Yoshino often said that his proudest accomplishment was watching Brian and Lisa graduate college, earn their masters degrees and go on to their own professional prosperity. This, he said, was proof that his life was a success.
Mr. Yoshino spent his retirement as an amazing grandfather to Grace and Luke. His happiest moments came from being a full time playmate to his grandchildren. He cherished every moment he spent pushing swings at the park, digging in a sandbox and having tea parties with stuffed bears. His attentive and abounding love for his grandchildren was his greatest joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Katsuei and Itsuko. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his two children Brian (Ingrid) and Lisa (Rick) and his two grandchildren Grace & Luke. He is also survived by his brothers Sumio, Kunio & Nobuo and his sisters Yoko, Setsuko, Junko, Hiromi and Nobuko.
