Obituary

Iona Lois Gotaas passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2015, in the presence of her beloved husband, David S. Gotaas, and other family members at the family's condominium in Boca Raton, Florida after suffering a heart attack three weeks earlier. Lois was born on May 16, 1924 in Chicago to Sten and Evelyn Benson. After graduating as a registered nurse from Augustana Hospital School of Nursing, she worked as a visiting nurse in the poor neighborhoods of Chicago. In 1947, she married David whom she had met at Moody Church in Chicago, where she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, and where David entered the Christian ministry as Pastors' Assistant in 1949 . She became a dynamic Bible teacher, much loved counselor, gracious hostess, and faithful mentor for hundreds of individuals. Her home was known as a haven for the neglected and the powerful. She was a devoted mother and faithful wife supporting the work of her husband as a pastor's assistant at Moody Church, as missionary in Venezuela, as Chair of Missions at Moody Bible Institute, as the Senior Minister of Winnetka Bible Church, and as Director of Doctoral Studies at Columbia Biblical Seminary. For the last seventeen years, she and David maintained an active life at the Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center in Rockford while spending the winters in Boca Raton. She is survived by her four children – Sharon (Don) Frahler, David John (Sally) Gotaas, Ruth (David) Anderson, and Barbara (Keith) Johnston; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 11am on May 2 at the Chapel at Fairhaven Retirement Center in Rockford.
