Obituary

Howard I. Duncan, age 94, of Wheaton since 1937, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 15, 2016. He was born on November 14, 1921 in Miles City, Montana to Rev. John and Clara Duncan, who homesteaded and planted churches in Montana. Howard grew up attending a one room schoolhouse with his six siblings.

The family moved to Wheaton, Illinois where they purchased five acres on Main St. and Parkway Dr. He graduated from Wheaton High School in 1939, Moody Bible Institute and after the war, Wheaton College. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Germany. He met Lina Olsen, a co-woker at Mongomery Wards, and they were married in 1946. They raised their three children in Wheaton while he worked in insurance sales. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Elmhurst for over 30 years. In 1971, he worked as the manager of Four Seasons Motel in Glen Ellyn. After Lina died in 1987, he retired in 1988. He married Lena Bishop and they enjoyed 22 years together until she passed away in 2010.

Throughout his life his faith was central. He was an active member of College Church in Wheaton, Midwest Bible Church in Chicago, North Side Gospel Center in Chicago and First Baptist Church of Wheaton. He served as Sunday School Teacher, Awana leader, Camp Awana leader, and many church board positions. Through his church ministries he often volunteered at Pacific Garden Mission. He also volunteered at Repeat Boutique, the Billy Graham Center and DuPage Convalescent Center. He had the gift of hospitality and encouragement. He lived for his family and made a point of attending his children's sports and school activities.

He is survived by three children, Darlene (John) Bishop of Fredonia, WI, Howard John (Linda) Duncan of Chicago, and Kathlene (Lloyd) Smith of Knoxville, TN, eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-children, John (Darlene) Bishop, Bill (Milli) Bishop, Ruth (John) Goasdone, and Paul (Joanne) Bishop; 7 step-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by one sister, Beth Volkman of CA.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Lina and Lena Bishop Duncan, his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Wheaton, 1310 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187, where friends may visit with the family prior to the service from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Private interment will be held at Wheaton Cemetery.
