IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helene S.
Wells
June 2, 1932 – May 15, 2025
Helene S. Wells, age 92, of Winter Park, FL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
A longtime resident of Wheaton since 1968, Helene was born on June 2, 1932, in Whitehall, New York, to Willis Scott and Ann (née Ellesbury). She was raised in Brandon, Vermont, and developed a lifelong love of learning and education early in life.
Helene earned her undergraduate degree in marketing from Ithaca College in New York and went on to receive her master's degree in education from Boston University in 1954. On June 30, 1956, she married the love of her life, Arthur F. Wells, in her hometown of Whitehall. Together they shared many joyful years of marriage and built a life centered on family, community, and a shared passion for learning.
Helene began her professional life as an elementary school teacher in Manchester, New Hampshire. After relocating to Wheaton, she joined Wheaton Warrenville South High School as a librarian. For more than two decades, Helene inspired students to discover the joy of reading and the limitless possibilities found within the walls of a library. She had a gift for helping students find exactly what they needed—whether for research or for pleasure—and was a beloved mentor to many. She retired in 2010 but never lost her deep love for books and education.
Helene lived a rich and vibrant life. She especially enjoyed summers in Duxbury, Massachusetts, where she spent time at the beach with family and friends. A passionate supporter of the arts, she was an active member of Wheaton Drama Club, where she delighted in performing in numerous stage productions, especially musicals. Helene also excelled at playing cards and was an avid bridge player.
Above all, Helene cherished her family. She considered her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to be her greatest accomplishments. Her warmth, wit, and wisdom will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Helene is survived by her loving sons, Scott Wells and Mark (Sondra) Wells; her cherished grandchildren, Annah and Leah Schmidt, and Ben, Sam, Graham, and Claire Wells; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Benji and Arthur Wells. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Scott.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; her daughter, Heidi Schmidt; and her sister, Marianne Scott.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, May 23, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at St. Irene Catholic Church, 28w441 Warrenville Rd, Warrenville, IL 60555.
