Adelheid (Heidi) H. Brewer, age 78, passed away on Monday morning, December 16, 2019, in her home in Wheaton, Illinois.  She is survived by her daughters; Katri (Daniel) Delac and Krista (Philip) Reid; grandson Calvin Reid; and her siblings Ehrhardt Lang, Martin Lang, and Theodor Lang.  She was preceded in death by her husband, David Brewer, and her siblings, Ernstfried Lang and Dorothea M. Lang.

Heidi, as she was called, was born in Kikuna, Japan, to her German missionary parents, Rev. Ernst and Dorothea Lang.  Growing up as a young German girl in Japan influenced her life significantly. She understood what it meant to be multicultural:  she spoke German at home, Japanese with her friends, and then English in school. She and her siblings experienced Japan during the aftermath of World War II.  Heidi attended the American School in Japan for high school, graduating in 1960. She was an outgoing student participating as a co-captain on the basketball team and was a part of the homecoming court.  She then traveled by boat from Japan to America for college at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Education, graduating in 1964, and it was at NCC where she met and later married David Brewer in 1968.  Heidi made her career teaching and she worked in the Lisle Public school system from 1965-1974. She taught 6th grade for 2 years and the rest of her teaching career was as a 7th-8th grade language arts teacher. After leaving teaching in 1974, Heidi remained home with her girls until the late 1990's.  She then returned to teaching as an aide in District 200 at Washington Elementary School and later at Longfellow Elementary School. She retired in 2012.

Throughout her life, Heidi was a person who enjoyed her career, her family, travel, and her church.  She was quick to smile and ready to encourage her girls as they grew up, and a supportive life partner to David.  A perfect day for her always involved some form of family, and she was a great recorder of these events with pictures cataloged in yearly albums.  She lived as a person of Faith, and her strength in God was evident to those around her.

A memorial service will be held on January 5 at 2 pm at Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton.
