Obituary

Rev. Harold Wayne Tietjen, age 95, a resident of Carol Stream, Illinois, died April 10, 2011 at Johnson Health Care Center in Carol Stream, Illinois. He was born September 6, 1915 in New York City, NY and was a long time resident of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.

Marked by a deep Christian faith and a quiet, gentle spirit, he was active as a minister, educator or chaplain for more than fifty years. He graduated from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary and held a master's degree from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Following service in WWII in the Pacific Theater on the administrative staff of General Douglas MacArthur, Mr. Tietjen moved back to New York City and was married to Margaret Q. Smith on August 3, 1946. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky and then Chicago where Mr. Tietjen attended seminary. He served churches in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. After completing courses at Marquette University, he began a career in education first with the Utica, Michigan and then the Detroit Public Schools as a speech pathologist. He also served in the Monroe, Michigan school system as Director of Special Education, spent a year on the faculty of Geneva College in Pennsylvania and for many years taught speech at Wayne County Community College in Michigan. After retirement in 1983, he volunteered for nearly 20 years as a chaplain at Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe Farms.

He is survived by his sons, David (Jennie) Tietjen of Carol Stream, Illinois and Peter (Doreen) of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, grandchildren, Amy (Jeffrey) Langkamp of Brown Deer, Wisconsin, Susan Tietjen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Andrew (Kristina) Tietjen of Watertown, Wisconsin, Jillian Tietjen of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kathryn (Chance) Sumner of West Palm Beach, Florida and great-grandchildren Madelyn, Isabelle, Logan Langkamp and Aiden Tietjen. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant twin brothers, and his wife Margaret (2004).

A memorial service will be held on April 25, 2011 at 11 am preceded by a visitation at 10 am at Evangel Baptist Church, 1900 Manchester Road, Wheaton, IL 60187. Interment will be at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
