Harlen R. Chapman, age 81, a resident of Warrenville, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. He was born January 25, 1942 in Paris, Illinois to William Earl & Alma Mae (Rude) Chapman.
Harlen graduated from Kansas High School in Kansas, Illinois and upon graduation enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Forrestal CVA 59 and utilized his Naval training for Electronic Technicians by working on radar equipment.
Harlen met Judith Gumm, had their first date at the Newport Antique Auto Hill Climb in October and after a brief courtship were married on February 14, 1965. Heading back to the "Old Car Hill Climb" was something they did for many years.They both worked at Motorola prior to him being employed at International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). Harlen worked for IBM 38 years as a repair service technician until his retirement in 2004.
Harlen enjoyed bowling with a church bowling league and riding his motorcycles with Judy. He was a member of the American Motorcyclist Association, Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Gold Wing Touring Association, Harley Owners Group, Honda Rider's Club of America, the Virago Owners Club and local riding groups Illini Free Spirit Riders and North American 40+ Touring Riders even after he was physically unable to ride. Harlen was an avid reader and enjoyed watching old western movies and science fiction shows. He also enjoyed cheering on the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judith; his children Monica (Luis Carlos) Salinas, Linda (Eric) Hosteland & William Chapman; his grandchildren Johnathan (Carissa) Salinas & Raquel Salinas; and his great-granddaughter Nova Sills. He is also survived by numerous nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother Harold (the late Virginia) Chapman.
Interment & military honors were held privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
