Günter
Caspari
July 9, 1940 – November 9, 2023
Günter Caspari, age 83, a resident of Wheaton, IL, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023. He was born July 9, 1940 in St. Wendel, Germany to Eduard & Katharina Caspari.
Growing up in the small town of St Wendel in war-torn Germany, Günter and his family did not have much, except love for each other and their close-knit community. Upon graduating high school, he pursued a chemistry degree, at the Freie Universität in West Berlin. During this tumultuous time in history, West Berlin was an island of democracy surrounded by communist East Germany which was accessible via a long train ride from West Germany. On one of these train rides, Günter met Christa, who was studying nursing in West Berlin. Upon getting his doctorate in chemistry, Günter took a post-doctorate role at Boston University and more importantly, convinced Christa to take a chance to move to America where they both got married. They were the first ones of their family to move overseas. Intending to eventually move back to Germany, they decided to extend their adventure in America a little longer where Günter took an opportunity to work at Amoco as a research chemist. When Amoco's R&D center moved to Naperville, Günter and Christa moved too. They settled in Wheaton and began to raise a family. Plans to go move back to Germany quickly faded as they planted roots in their community and at their church that they've attended for over 50 years. Günter enjoyed playing soccer, traveling, hiking, and camping out west with his family. Also, making it back to visit his friends and family in Germany many times. He and Christa co-founded a non-profit German School with other friends where they served for over 15 years teaching German to children. Günter was an avid reader and passionate about history and theology, and always enjoyed sharing stories with others. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Christa; his children Gottfried (Belinda) Caspari & Gisela (Robert) Wicks; his grandchildren Matthias Caspari, Katriela (Zachary) Scarborough, Elias Caspari, Colin Wicks, Morgan Wicks & Tyler Wicks. Also survived by his sister Irmtrud (the late Josef) Ritter. He was preceded in death by his brother Eduard (the late Inge) Caspari.
A memorial service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, 410 N. Cross St, Wheaton, IL, on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
