Obituary
Gunnar Eric Pihl, age 101, a resident of Wyndemere Retirement Community in Wheaton, and formerly of Princeton, IL, died Friday, December 1, at Wynscape Healthcare Center in Wheaton. He was born on March 30, 1905 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
In 1908 his family emigrated to Princeton, Illinois where he lived until 1996. He married Violet Erickson on October 14, 1933. He was the owner of Pihl's Jewelers in Princeton for over 50 years, retiring in 1992 at the age of 87.
Mr. Pihl was an active member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Princeton, where he faithfully served as a head usher for many years, and in many other activities. More recently he has attended the Faith Evangelical Covenant Church in Wheaton. Gunnar was faithful to his Lord and Savior and a simple and powerful Christian witness to his beloved family and friends throughout his long life. He enjoyed golf and was a lifelong Cub fan.
He is survived by two children, Bradley (Bonnie) Pihl, Sr., of Wheaton, and Patricia (Peter) Eckdahl of Montgomery, AL; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Daniel) Doebler, Bradley Pihl, Jr.,Brian (Lorri) Petrauskas, and Juliann Petrauskas and two great-grandchildren, Alexis Petrauskas and Josiah Doebler.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Violet E. Pihl, his parents, two sisters and a brother.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 7, at 11:00 A.M. at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Princeton, 24 N. Main St, Princeton, IL. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Princeton. A memorial service will also be held on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Anderson Auditorium at Wyndemere Retirement Community, 200 Wyndemere Cir. in Wheaton.
