Gretchen "Gigi" Smith's Obituary
Gretchen "Gigi" Smith passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the Elkhart Hospice House after experiencing a stroke in her sleep. On March 12, 1935 Gretchen Gay Van Scoy was born in Chicago, Illinois, and dubbed "Gigi" by her cousins. She met Larry Smith at the University of Colorado and the two were married June 20, 1959 in Dixon, Illinois.
In addition to Larry, her beloved husband of 55 years, other survivors are her daughters, Sarah (Jonathan) Van Oss of Wheaton, Illinois and Lisa Smith of St. Helena, California; and three granddaughters, Lizzy, Laura and Katie Van Oss.
Gigi was a caring mother, devoted wife and encouraging grandmother. She delighted in nature and books. She will be remembered for her gentle thoughtfulness, deep faith and sweet humor.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 1st, at St. John of the Cross Episcopal Church, 601 E Vistula St, Bristol, IN 46507.
Memorial donations may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 22579 Old U.S. 20, Elkhart, IN 46516; or to P.E.O.; or to St. John of the Cross, 601 E Vistula St, Bristol, IN 46507.
