Gretchen Johnson, 74, a resident of Lexington Square in Lombard, and formerly a Wheaton resident since 1980, died Wednesday, September 3 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. She was born January 24, 1934 in Red Oak, Iowa.
Gretchen earned a degree in geology and spanish from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She worked for Texaco in the Houston area as a petroleum geologist. She later worked as a science school teacher in the Libertyville school district. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where she served in numerous guilds. She was a Candy-Striper at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.
She is survived by her two sons; Bruce Eldred Johnson of Laurel, MT, and Eric James (Jennifer) Johnson of Warrenville; six grandchildren, Travis, Christine, Matthew, Stephanie, and Carl and Hank Johnson; and her sister, Karen (Steve) Sawin of Kill Devil Hills, NC.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, James; her sister, Kristen Olson Deithelm; and her parents, Eldred and Alice Olson.
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 26 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel at Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 N. West Street, in Wheaton. Interment will follow the service at Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton.
