Obituary

Gordon Ray Schulenburg, age 86, a resident of the Holmstad in Batavia, IL, was ushered into the presence of his Lord on Friday, November 24, 2023—his 61st wedding anniversary. He was born on April 24, 1937 in Chicago to Rev. Ray and Evelyn Schulenburg.

Gordon grew up primarily in Moline, Illinois. He graduated from Moline High School prior to moving to Chicago where he met the love of his life, Beatrice Elfstrom. He attended Wheaton College and Northern Illinois University before beginning four years of service in the United States Army. Upon completing his military service, he married Beatrice on November 24, 1962.

He started his career at Continental Bank on LaSalle St. in Chicago. He worked in the Real Estate Trust Department for several years before becoming a Vice-President of Mortgage Lending at the St. Charles Savings and Loan. In 1986, he started ValuMasters, a real estate appraisal firm. He expanded the company to include a residential real estate brokerage firm.

He was a past-president of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, a Kiwanis member, and a past-president of the Appraisal Institute of the Chicago Chapter.

His Christian faith was central to his life. He was active at Fox Valley Bible Church, where he served as the chairman of the elder board and a song leader; at Chapelstreet Church, where he sang in the choir; and with the Gideons International. Gordon didn't just talk about faith, but he lived out his beliefs, modeling what it means to love God, love others, and make disciples. He truly wanted everyone he met to know and love Jesus because he never got over how much Jesus loved him.

In retirement, he and Bea have lived at the Holmstad where he served on numerous committees.

He is survived by his wife, Bea, five children, Mark (Carol) Schulenburg of Wheaton, Randy (Lori) Schulenburg of Hampshire, Brian (Cyndi) Schulenburg of Eden Prairie, MN, Kevin (Melissa) Schulenburg of Geneva, and Jenny (Matt) Caterer of Aurora, 14 grandchildren, Kirsten (Keegan) Ovitt, Brittney (Chris) Dymski, Lindsey Schulenburg, Joy Schulenburg, Matthew Schulenburg, Breanna (Radleigh) Wakefield, Christopher (Samantha) Schulenburg, Jeremy Schulenburg, Zachary Schulenburg, Christina Schulenburg, Luke Schulenburg, Rebecca Schulenburg, Joshua Schulenburg, and Kylee Caterer, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Roger (Barbara) Schulenburg and Richard (Sharon) Schulenburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
