Gordon K.
Nelson
June 24, 1927 – April 5, 2021
Gordon Kent Nelson, age 93, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, and formerly a longtime resident of Flossmoor, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 5, 2021 at his home and surrounded by his family. He was born on June 24, 1927 in Chicago to Arthur and Ruth Nelson.
Gordon grew up on the south side of Chicago and graduated from Hyde Park High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the Navy and was completing Radio, Radar and Sonar School when WWII ended. He went on to study at the University of Illinois, both the Navy Pier and Champaign campuses, receiving a degree in Civil Engineering in 1951. Immediately following graduation he began working with his father Art in the family business, building and leasing truck terminals in Chicago. He continued in that work for 50 years. On September 26, 1959 Gordon married Marion Johnson at Beverly Covenant Church in Chicago. Together they raised two daughters in Flossmoor.
Gordon served on the Board of Independent Limestone Company in Bloomington IN for 24 years. He loved to make trips to "the quarry". He was also an active member of Beverly Covenant Church. He served on the Trustee Board for many years and also helped out with youth work. Gordon loved to play golf, attend White Sox games and spend time on the water in any boat that was available.
Gordon's greatest love was spending time with his family. He always enjoyed taking everyone out to eat. He especially loved spending time with his two grandchildren.
Gordon was a humble man with a quiet, yet strong faith. We are thankful for the example he set in the way he lived his life, honoring the Lord and caring for his family.
He is survived by his two daughters, Jane Nelson of Wheaton and Susan (Jim) Matson of Glen Ellyn, two grandchildren, Erik and Kristina, sister-in-law, Terry (Donald) Nelson, niece, Cynthia (Mark) Bretscher, nephews, Tom (Bonnie) Nelson and Greg (Lou Ann) Nelson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion, his parents and his brother Donald.
A private family burial service will be held on April 15 th . A memorial service will be planned in coming months. Please check back on the Hultgren site hultgrenfh.com for further details.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Beverly Covenant Church, Chicago or The Windsor Park Benevolent Fund, Carol Stream.
