Gloria M.
Doerfler
May 16, 1926 – June 10, 2022
Gloria M Doerfler, (VanDyke), age 96, a resident of Wynscape in Wheaton, IL, passed away on June 10, 2022. She was born May 16, 1926, in Chicago to Edward & Hazel Vandyke.
When Gloria was 2 years old her mother died of illness and she and her older siblings, Muriel, and brother Kermit, were placed with relatives until her father married Blanche Dunning. They then had two additional girls, Sharon, and Norene. At age 17, Gloria traveled to Florida to visit her older sister Muriel in Sarasota where she met her husband, Lt. Joseph Doerfler, who had just returned from overseas duty as a B-17 pilot during WWII. They married there on Nov. 5, 1945. Gloria spent several years as an Air Force Officers wife travelling cross country with Joe to work at several air bases. After he was discharged, they moved to Markham IL where they owned McMillan's Service & Hardware until they retired in 1975. Unfortunately, Joe could not sit still, and they embarked on another business venture and purchased the Doerfler Insurance Agency.
Gloria was a beautiful, hardworking, kind woman who loved her family and community.
She is survived by her sister, Noreen Van Dyke, sister-in-law, Elaine Josephart, three sons, Dr. Gregory Doerfler (Cynthia) of Winfield, IL, Dr. Richard Doerfler (Janet) of Lexington, KY and Scott Doerfler (Laura) of Rio Verde, AZ; and eight grandchildren, Caroline, Daniel, Courtney, (Greg) Benjamin, Katherine, Matthew, (Ric) Kristofer and Amanda (Scott) and 8 great grandchildren.
Gloria will be cremated, and ashes interred with her husband, Joseph, at Arlington National Cemetery.
Per Gloria's wishes, there will not be a wake or ceremony. In lieu of flowers and gifts, Memorial gifts can be made to the Distinguished Flying Cross Society – www.dfcsociety.org
