Obituary

Glenn L. Joy, age 88, a resident of Wheaton, and formerly of Winfield, died Friday, October 1, at Wynscape Nursing Center in Wheaton. He was born January 22, 1916 in Dexter, Kansas.

Mr. Joy came to the Chicago area from Whiting, KS in 1943 to attend Moody Bible Institute, and then needed to return home to work on the farm with his father during the war years. In 1950 the family returned to the Wheaton area in order for his oldest son, Don, to attend Wheaton Academy in West Chicago. During his first years in Wheaton he worked at Baptista Films, a company producing Christian films. He soon rented the 250 acre Harold Warp farm in Winfield, and moved his family there where he and his wife lived for 25 years. He and his three growing sons took on the task of milking 125 head of cows two times a day and farming hundreds of acres in the DuPage County area.

Each fall he had many Wheaton College students and area church youth group members coming out for hay rides. He especially enjoyed giving these young people a touch of farm life and a good time.

In early 1960 he had the pleasure of working with a group establishing the Evangel Baptist Church in Wheaton as they met at the Fairgrounds weekly while building their church. He also spent years working in the Harvard Avenue Bible Church and First Baptist Church of Wheaton.

With the encroachment of developments and less acreage available to farm, he and his youngest son purchased a Mobil gas station in Wheaton, where Joys Auto serviced many customer's car needs until 1972, when he and his wife retired to Arizona. However, health needs brought them back to the Winfield area in 1986 where he and his wife lived on his son's farm until her death in 1996.

He is survived by his sons, Donald (Margaret) of Rockford, Carol (Naomi) of Aurora, and James (Nelda) of Winfield; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie; and his parents, Lester and Shirley.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 3, from 4-8 P.M. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, where a funeral service will be held on Monday, October 4, at 1100 A.M. Interment is private.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Interlink Ministries, PO Box 460, Apple Creek, OH 44606, for the ministry of his grandson Ryan Joy who is serving in the Brazilian Amazon River region with Mission Aviation Fellowship.
