Gerda M. Dahl, age 95, a resident of Wydemere Retirement Community in Wheaton and formerly a longtime resident of Glen Ellyn, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 in Wheaton. She was born on October 13, 1913 in Breman, Germany to Fredrick and Martha Albrecht.
Mrs. Dahl graduated from Proviso High School in Maywood, where she served as secretary and Director of Publicity for over 30 years. In 1936 she married Rev. Robert Dahl. They served churches Joliet, IL, Harcourt, IA and DesMoines, IA. In 1948 they moved to Maywood, IL so he could serve as Chaplain for Northwestern (Wesley Memorial) Hospital in Chicago for 28 years.
She volunteered at Central Du Page Hospital in Winfield for over 30 years and was an active member of Glen Ellyn United Methodist Church and latter at Gary United Methodist Church. She was past-president of Chapter GN and Chapter KY of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She also served as Treasurer of the International P.E.O. Convention at McCormick Place.
She is survived by Barbara (Max) Canady of Cadiz, KY and Janet (John) Elliott of Gilman, IL, five grandchildren, Cindy (Gene) Massie, Karen (Steve) Coffinbargar, Debbie (Guy) Snowden, Erin Elliott and Andrew (Amanda) Elliott, six great-grandchildren, two sisters, Esther Lindstrom, and Carol (Ben) McPheeters and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Robert A. Dahl in 1996, one son Kenneth Fredrick Dahl and one sister, Edith Rappuhn.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 11:00 A.M. at Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main Street, Wheaton, IL 60187.
