Gerald "Jerry" Black

January 23, 1958 – January 9, 2025

Gerald "Jerry" Black, age 66, a beloved resident of Winfield, IL, since 2006, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Born on January 23, 1958, in Wichita, Kansas, Jerry was the cherished son of Rev. Everett and Betty Black.

Jerry's childhood journey took him from Spencer, Iowa, to Glen Ellyn, IL, where he grew up and graduated from Glenbard West High School in 1976. His athletic talents shone as he attended Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he proudly played basketball and built lifelong friendships.

After college, Jerry ventured west to Los Angeles, where he established a remarkable career in the entertainment industry. As a lighting director, he worked for esteemed studios like Sony Pictures Studios and Culver Studios, leaving his mark on iconic films such as Batman and Charlie's Angels. A leader in his field, Jerry's creativity and expertise illuminated countless productions, earning him the admiration of colleagues and peers.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jerry will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and a remarkable ability to bring people together. His warmth and quick wit brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. He was a dedicated sports enthusiast, passionately following the Chicago Bulls and Bears, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends.

Jerry's greatest pride and joy was his daughter, Sophia Black of Winfield, whom he adored and cherished deeply. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Ann (Carl) Herbst and Billie Jean (Ken) Ellingsen; his nieces and nephews, Amy (Pat) Schmidt, Janeen (Jon) Klinkenborg, Ben Lau, Jared Ellingsen, and Janie Ellingsen; as well as many great-nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.  Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Paula Swanson and his twin sister Janelle Black.

A celebration of Jerry's life will be held this spring.
