IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frederick W.
Miller
November 20, 1932 – December 22, 2024
Frederick Walcott Miller was born in Royal Oak, Michigan on November 20, 1932.
He was the second child of Lynn Smith Miller and Marie Helen (Walcott) Miller.
He spent his summers as a child at Epworth Heights in Ludington, Michigan along the shores of Lake Michigan. He delivered newspapers to cottagers as well as working as a bellhop and night clerk for the on-site hotel. There was also time for volleyball games, swim meets and lying around in the sand getting a tan.
Fred graduated from Royal Oak High School, attended Mount Hermon School for Boys (MA) for one year, and graduated from Hillsdale College (MI), majoring in English. While at Hillsdale, he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi social fraternity and editor of the Hillsdale Collegian, the student-published newspaper. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a Master's degree in Journalism.
He met his wife, Carol Yvonne Evans, at Hillsdale College and they were married on August 18, 1956, at First Baptist Church in Davison, Michigan. The couple had three daughters and one son from 1960 and 1966, all born in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Fred's journalism career included ten years as a reporter on daily newspapers (Decatur Review (IL) and The Daily Tribune, Royal Oak, MI), ten years in corporate public relations and product publicity (Chrysler, Burroughs, Honeywell, Gillette), and fifteen years on industrial trade journals, mainly in the field of computer management (Hitchcock Publishing, Allured Publishing). He also had other writing positions at various companies before his retirement at the age of 62. Fred's career took him from Illinois to Michigan then Massachusetts before returning to Illinois.
He and Carol spent 30 years volunteering with Prison Fellowship and JUST of DuPage, conducting weekend seminars in Illinois prisons and leading Sunday night Bible studies in the local county jail. He published and mailed an every-other-month Christian newsletter to prison and jail inmates for 25 years ("The Narrow Way").
He was involved in Crossroads Prison Ministry, correcting over 1,400 Bible study lessons from prison inmates from across the United States. He and Carol were co-founders of an after-care house in Wheaton, Illinois for ex-offenders, and mentored and provided spiritual guidance to many former inmates over the years. Fred also published a newsletter for ten years called "Diggings and Rubbings" for Friends of Pioneer Cemeteries in Milton Township, Illinois.
Fred spent much time researching and documenting the Miller and Walcott family genealogies. He compiled a publication titled "My Daily Hope and Truth - Words of Spiritual Inspiration from the Letters of a Union Soldier in the Civil War". Those letters were written by great-grandfather, James Augustus Miller, to wife Caroline. His publication "The Clank of Arms Be Heard No More" is the compilation of these letters as well as three diaries belonging to James A. Miller. Fred gave several presentations on the Civil War and the experiences shared by his great-grandfather.
He attended countless activities in which his grandchildren participated: hockey games, volleyball games, swim meets, piano recitals, band concerts, and choir concerts, He and Carol took the grandkids on intergenerational Elderhostel trips.
Fred was a beacon of light for so many with the way he shared his faith and lived for the Lord and expressed his love for people by talking and engaging with them.
After living in the house in Glen Ellyn, IL for almost 40 years, he and Carol moved to Covenant Living at Windsor Park, a large retirement and continuing care campus in Carol Stream, IL, where he lived until his passing on December 22, 2024.
Frederick is survived by his four children: Karen Miller (Thomas Westcott) of La Quinta, California; Linda Miller (Charles Bryda) of Naperville, Illinois; Moyra Gorski (Thomas) of Geneva, Illinois; and Todd Miller of Frederick, Maryland; three grandsons, Paul Gorki (Kristi), Tyler Gorski, and Tommy Gorski (Pauline Salcedo); four granddaughters, Carissa Speelman (Brian), Cailyn Ten Hoeve, Anna Gorski, and Lindsay Bryda (fiancé Davis Winborne); three great-grandchildren, Adeline Speelman, Owen Speelman, and Liam Speelman; his older brother, John Miller of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved companion for the past several years with whom he shared a birthday, Shirley Clark. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 64 years, Carol Evans Miller, and his younger brother, James Miller.
