IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Fred
Smith
July 16, 1943 – September 23, 2024
Fred Smith, 81, a cherished resident of Aurora, IL, passed away peacefully at home on September 23, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 16, 1943, in LaGrange, GA, to Eddie Burton and Mattie Smith.
Fred spent his early years in LaGrange before moving to Chattanooga, TN, and eventually to Chicago, IL, to live with his Aunt Zet. He began his career at Belden Corporation and was later drafted into the U.S. Army. Upon returning, he rejoined Belden, where he met the love of his life, Jacqulyn Martin. Their beautiful journey together began with their marriage in 1971, and they welcomed two sons into their family. In 1976, they moved to Aurora, where they spent 48 wonderful years, opening their home to many family members and "adopted" sons and daughters.
Fred transitioned from Belden to a management position at Allis Chalmers in Batavia, IL, which later became AGCO Corporation. In addition to his role at AGCO, he also worked at Osco Drug in Aurora to ensure that his sons received a Christian education and to support their college expenses.
A devoted member of Wheaton Christian Center Church for over 50 years, Fred served as a lead usher and was actively involved with Pastor and Mrs. Carlton Arthurs' vision, contributing as a board member of the church.
An avid fan of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Bears, Fred's enthusiasm for sports was infectious. Friends who watched games with him knew he could go from sitting calmly to jumping up or kneeling intently as critical moments unfolded. His dedication as a fan extended to any team that his sons, Eddie and Michael, played for. As a grandfather, he embraced his role as "Papa," celebrating the accomplishments of his grandchildren at games, concerts, and recitals alongside Jacqulyn.
Fred is survived by his wife, Jacqulyn; his sons, Eddie (Alissa) and Michael (Olivia); and five beloved grandchildren, Isabella, Paige, Mia, Trinity, and Mason. He also leaves behind his brothers, William (Frida) and Melvin (Valerie); sisters Mattie (Bennie), Lydia (Charles), and Lisa (Ted); as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Mattie; brothers Michael and Nathaniel; and sister Dorothy.
A visitation will take place on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Wheaton Christian Center Church (610 E. North Ave., Carol Stream, IL), followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery (4301 Roosevelt Rd., Hillside, IL).
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Wheaton Christian Center Aurora (161 S. Lincolnway St., North Aurora, IL 60542).
