Evelyn was born Anna Evelina Maria Nelson on Oct. 14, 1916 in Chicago, IL to Swedish immigrants Karl Gustav Nelson & Hilma Sophia Carlson. She was the middle child of five. She graduated from the Free Church Academy and took vocational classes at Lakeview Evening School where she met her husband to be, Walter Monson, in typing class. They were married on Aug. 12, 1938 and were devoted to each other for 60 years. She lost Walter in 1998. Evelyn & Walter lived all their married life in the Chicago area except during WWII when Wally enlisted in the Navy & Evelyn moved to California to be near where he was stationed. They were blessed with two adopted children, Patty (Patricia Johnson) & Scotty (Scott). She lost her son in 1987.
The focus of Evelyn's childhood home & her own home was the church. She grew up attending Lakeview Baptist Church, which held services in both Swedish & English when she was young. She was baptized at 16. Evelyn & her family attended Northwest Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school & often played the piano as an accompanist. She played piano by ear.
Evelyn loved working with numbers and her first job was at Benson & Rickson as a bookkeeper & then ran the bookkeeping dept at the Chicago Motor Club for 8 years. Later, when her children were in high school, she returned to bookkeeping and worked for the Baptist General Conference (now Converge Worldwide) for 17 years.
As a volunteer she was a pink lady at Northwest Community Hospital for 17 years & held offices in the TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) organization.
Evelyn was out going & loved to socialize. She adored playing games. Even up to her final months & despite being nearly blind, she managed to play bingo at the nursing home. She was a faithful & dedicated friend, adored Aunt, grandmother to Emily & Grant & great grandmother to Anthony, Dominic, Nicolas & Stellan. She was loved by all who knew her and will be so missed.
