Evelyn Dorothy Feierabend, a resident of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, IL died Friday, March 30, 2012. She was the youngest daughter born to Clayton and Ida (Rosnow) Parker at home on their farm near Long Prairie, Minnesota. After graduating high school she attended business college in St. Cloud, where she met Clarence Feierabend on what turned out to be a very good blind date. They were married in the chapel at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, Nov. 8, 1942 and shared their lives together for 65 years.
Clarence remained in the service after the war ended, affording them the opportunity to live in Virginia, Washington, Greenland, Utah, Texas, Wyoming and Illinois. Like most military wives, Evelyn excelled at "blooming where she was planted" and created a secure and loving home in any environment given. Some of the more challenging were the "somewhat renovated" chicken coop near Rantoul AFB and the 8 ft. travel trailer in Sundance that sheltered 4 while awaiting the completion of new quarters. Her sense of humor and love of life made her a good friend. She found lifelong ones with every move and cherished them all.
Evelyn and Clarence traveled to many parts of the world after he retired. Of the many photos that document their experiences, nearly all have babies and children in the frame. These "little ones" were her delight. Over the years Evelyn was a mother to 23 foster babies.
After moving to Windsor Park Manor, Evelyn decided that new residents should be welcomed as she always acknowledged any new neighbor. She and Clarence conspired to do so by quietly delivering a rose to the door of newcomers and those in mourning.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Feierabend; her father, Clayton Parker, her mother, Ida (Rosnow); brothers, Albert, Rueben, Donald and Lester Parker; sister, Grace (Robert) Burg and cherished daughter, Nancy (Richard) Smith.
She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Halbfoster of Warrenville, IL; grandsons, Ken (Damian) Draper of Glen Allen, VA, Noah (Katrina) Halbfoster of Altamonte Springs, FL, and Brodie (Liz) Halbfoster of Plainfield, NJ; great-grandchildren, Madison and Dalton Draper of Glen Allen, VA and Adien and Evylee Halbfoster of Altamonte Springs, FL and many nieces and nephews, all of which have been blessed with her kindness and unconditional love.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 7, at 2:00pm at Windsor Park Manor, 124 Windsor Park Dr., Carol Stream, IL 60188.
Memorials may be directed to the Windsor Park Johnson Health Care Center Chapel Fund.
