Emilio J. Troianello, age 92, a resident of Beacon Hill retirement community in Lombard, IL, died suddenly, Saturday, April 4. He was born on November 6, 1916 in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
Emilio was a trusted and brilliant chemist and member of the radionuclide team at the Food and Drug Administration's Winchester and Analytical Center (WEAC) and predecessor agencies for at least 40 years. He was a noted radiation chemist, was born in Lawrence, MA and educated at Tufts University, Medford, MA, where he received a BS in chemistry, magna cum laude, followed shortly by a Master of Science. After graduation, he served his country during World War II in the US Army. Early in his career he worked in the development of surfactants for detergents and was awarded a US Patent for his work with spontaneous emulsifiers. Mr. Troianello worked for more than 40 years at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Laboratory in Winchester, MA where he specialized in the evaluation of radiopharmaceutical drugs and the development of methods to determine trace levels of radioactive contaminants in both foods and drugs. During his long career, Mr. Troianello published many technical papers on fissionable materials and received numerous awards. These awards include commendations for his work during the Three Mile Island radiation emergency and for the development of quality control methods for ionization instrumentation. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and the Association of Analytical Communities
He spent the last years of his life living with his brother, Silvio and near his six great-nieces and nephews, whom he loved to play with, share his life experiences and watch grow. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by one brother, Silvio, his nephews, and nieces,and many great-grandnieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Mary, Concetta and Italia and brother, Joseph and his parents Gilda and Matteo Troianello.
A mass will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Michael Church, West and Illinois St., Wheaton. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 to 10:30 at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. Interment will be held at Arlington Cemetery.
