Elvera M. Anderson age 97, a resident of The Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, November 7, at The Holmstad where she had been a resident since 1979.
Mrs. Anderson was born on October 3, 1907 in Millard, South Dakota, the 5th of eleven children of Nicholas and Emma Wik.
She entered Faulkton High School, then attended Bethel Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating in 1927. With the goal of becoming a teacher, she earned teaching certificates at Spearfish Normal School and Aberdeen Normal School in South Dakota. She also studied at Northwestern Bible School in Minneapolis, and attended Bethel Seminary in St. Paul for one year.
She taught school in Orleans, South Dakota, for two years before her marriage on July 20, 1932, to the Rev. Ivar F. Anderson, whom she met at Bethel. She was a beloved minister's wife in Baptist General Conference churches in Dalbo, Minnesota; Providence, Rhode Island; Manistee, Michigan; and Custer, Michigan. Following two years when her husband worked for Bethel College and Seminary, the family moved to Chicago where Ivar was an administrator at Baptist General Conference headquarters for seventeen years. During those years, Elvera worked as a competent and dedicated employee at the Baptist headquarters and as a bookkeeper at Covenant Press.
During their retirement years, Elvera enjoyed their home at Gages Lake, Illinois, where she loved entertaining her children and grandchildren and continued her hobbies of sewing and crafts. The Andersons celebrated 63 years of marriage before Ivar passed away in 1996 at the age of 92.
Her survivors include two daughters, Eloise (LeRoy) Nelson of Chicago, Joanne (Vern) Hultgren of Wheaton; one son, Robert (Glenda) Anderson of Oakdale, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Bossman, and three brothers, Reynold, Harold (Lucinda) and Nicholas (Betty) Wik.
