Eileen Backes Hughes, age 100, passed away in Bloomington, IN on March 25, 2024. She was born in Peoria, IL and was the second of three daughters born to Nicholas M. and Ida M. Backes. She graduated in three years from Bradley University with a degree in Accounting and worked remotely for her father until his death in 1977. Her accounting skills and attention to detail were unsurpassed.

Eileen married Roy L. Hughes, whom she first met in grade school, in 1945 and was happily married until his death in 1993. She persevered and showed great courage by living independently until 2021 when she moved to Bloomington, IN to be near her daughter.

Eileen moved to Wheaton in 1959 and was a staunch supporter of all things relating to Illinois and especially to Wheaton. She lived in her home for 62 years and she adored her neighborhood for the entire time. She was an active member for many years of the Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi and the Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago, earning the friendship and respect of all who knew her. As a longtime member of Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, she was a faithful 25-year volunteer at the church's Wesley Shop.

Eileen was the world's biggest cheerleader for all members of her family. She eagerly awaited news of their activities and accomplishments and she cherished time spent together even though the clan was spread far and wide.

Eileen is survived by two daughters, Pamela (Richard M.) Finkbeiner of Paradise Valley, AZ and Victoria (Richard W.) Flint of Bloomington, IN. She has four grandchildren, Amy (Rob) Holt, Brad (Robyn) Finkbeiner, Jessica (Jonathan) Bess and Ross (Julie) Flint and seven great grandchildren.

Eileen's funeral service will be held on April 15, 2024 at 2:00 pm at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main Street, Wheaton. Visitation will be held at the same location from 1:00-2:00 pm and also immediately following the service. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery.

The family sincerely requests no flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the American Heart Association , the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. In honor of Eileen, please spend some time outdoors enjoying nature.
