Edwin Eric
(Ned) Nyman
June 21, 1924 – May 27, 2020
Born in Parsons, KS, Ned spent his first 15 years in Osawatomie, KS. At 16, after the death of his father, Ned and his mother moved to San Diego to live with his sister and her family, where he completed his senior year at Point Loma High School. He then attended a trade school at the encouragement of his brother-in-law and graduated in One of his teachers asked him if he wanted to go to college, and so Ned began that process by enlisting in the Navy. He was sent to Northwestern in Illinois, where he was accepted into the V12 program and began his premed training. It was an accelerated program in which he completed a three-year program in 18 months and then continued onto the University of Illinois in the OB-GYN department.
After graduating from medical school, he did his internship and his residency at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, working in gynecology and obstetrics. He also spent a year teaching medical students at his alma mater. While at West Suburban, he met Betty Nelson, who would become his lovely wife. Their first two children, Ned and Nancy, were already born when Ned received orders from the Navy and was sent to Monterey, California. While living in the Monterey area for the next two years, they welcomed their third child, Jayne, into the world. The next move was to Clarendon Hills, Illinois, where Ned started his medical practice and their fourth child, Bill was born. After a few years there, they moved to Hinsdale, Illinois and lived there until Ned retired. When asked how many babies he delivered over his career, he would proudly estimate 5000. He greatly enjoyed those days of bringing precious new lives into the world. After retirement, Ned and Betty moved to Tucson, Arizona to bask in the sunshine, play many rounds of golf, and enjoy their many friends—making many wonderful memories though many incredible friendships. After 20 years in Tucson, they found a retirement community at Windsor Park in Illinois, where they lived for 14 enjoyable years.
During the summers, Ned loved their Michigan lake house—a getaway home where he played golf and tinkered in his workshop, making stained glass, as well as wooden trains and toys. Ned was also quite good on skis, and patiently taught kids and grandkids how to ski and slalom through the years, both from the water and behind the wheel of the boat.
Ned is survived by Betty, his wife of 69 years, 4 children, 14 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren, each of whom he loved and took great pride in. He will be greatly missed by his family, but they are grateful for God's kindness and faithfulness.
Betty is very grateful for your kind thoughts, cards, and prayers.
Memorial gifts can be given to the Windsor Park Benevolent Fund or American Macular Degeneration Foundation (Research). P.O. Box 515 Northhampton, MA 01061-0515
