Obituary

Edward A. Groe, age 92, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and longtime resident of Wheaton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

Ed was born on August 13, 1932, in Chicago to Edward and Thora Groe. He grew up in Chicago, where he developed a strong work ethic and a love for craftsmanship. In 1952, he proudly entered the U.S. Army, serving in Korea as an automotive mechanic.

After returning home, Ed met the love of his life, Louise Larsen, at a church social. They were married on April 20, 1957, and built a beautiful life together, moving to Wheaton in 1963 when he accepted a position at Wheaton College as an Audio Visual Technician. Over the course of 30 years, he became a valued member of the college community, known for his dedication, problem-solving skills, and willingness to help others.

A true craftsman, Ed found great joy in woodworking and tinkering, creating intricate custom pens and jewelry. His skilled hands and patient nature were reflected in everything he made. He and Louise cherished their Norwegian heritage, and together they enjoyed memorable trips to Norway, deepening their appreciation for their family's roots.

Ed's Christian faith was the foundation of his life. He attended Wheaton Bible Church, where he found strength, purpose, and a close-knit community of friends.

Above all, Ed was a loving and devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 68 years, Louise, and their children: Susan (Robert) Beck, David (Vicki) Groe, Steve Groe, Timothy (Lesley) Groe, and Lynnette (Donald) Pokorny. He was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, and a great-grandchild.
