Edna Mae
Johnson
October 17, 1924 – July 12, 2022
Edna M. Johnson, age 97, a resident of Carol Stream, IL, died July 12, 2022, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. She was born October 17, 1924 in Powell, Pennsylvania to David and Susie Emery.
Edna was born on a farm in Cadis, PA and had no spiritual upbringing. A pastor came into the area, reopened the Cadis church and as a result, the family started to attend and soon became believers. Edna graduated from high school as the valedictorian.
She dedicated her life to Jesus Christ and attended Practical Bible Training School in Johnson City, NY. She met her husband, Robert there and they were married in 1945. He pastored churches in Mehoopany, PA and Gowanda, NY. While in Gowanda, they got acquainted with some Indians on the Cattaraugus Reservation. They then learned about the Six Nations Indians Reservation in Ontario, Canada and moved there. During the years of 1956 to 1970, she taught many Bible classes, Sunday School and ministered in many ways to the Six Nation Indians. When Bob died in 1970, she continued the ministry there until she sold her home in 1972, returned to the US to go back to college. She then taught at 2 different Christian schools in Trenton and Phillipsburg, NJ until she retired. She also was the camp cook for Camp BaYouCa in Smithville Flats, NY for 2 summers and New Life Island Camp in Frenchtown, NJ for more than 15 summers.
When Edna retired, she then moved to Travelers Rest, SC and lived with her daughter, Linda. When Linda passed away, she moved to Austin, MN to live with her youngest son, David. She was the church librarian at First Baptist Church of Austin. She served as librarian at St. Mark's Independent Living while she lived there.
She came to live with her daughter, Carol and attended Faith Baptist Church, Winfield. She was a voracious reader, worked puzzles and did word searches every day right up until her passing. She wrote letters to many missionaries around the world, to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and many others.
She was still alert and oriented up until her last hours. She remembered and knew the hundreds of family members, friends and acquaintances who were praying for her, visited her and sent messages to her until the day of her death. She died peacefully surrounded by her children.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol (David) Carlton of Carol Stream, IL, Paul (Joy) Johnson of Downingtown, PA, and David (Tricia) Johnson of Huntersville, NC, 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, plus nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Robert L. Johnson, her daughter Linda A. Johns; her sister, Eudora Magee and brother, James Emery.
